Frequently asked questions
Discover how rehearsals are run, the musical support provided across every section, and what you can expect under the guidance of our leadership team.
Who leads Baildon Orchestra?
Our musical director and conductor is Simon Gayton, and our orchestra leader is Lesley Gibbens. Together, they create an encouraging environment focused on the sheer joy of communal music-making.
What is the conductor's rehearsal style?
Simon Gayton adopts an approachable, supportive conducting style. Rather than preparing under the stress of public concerts, rehearsals focus on exploring diverse music, honing ensemble technique, and having fun together.
What does the orchestra leader do?
Lesley Gibbens serves as our leader, coordinating the string sections, and acting as the direct link between the players and the conductor to ensure everyone feels confident in their part. Lesley also assists with conducting the orchestra on occasion.
Do I have to play every week?
Not at all. You can come as often as you want or are able. There is no pressure. Each week we send out a message so we know how many players there will be. This helps our conductor plan the music for the night.
Which instrumental sections are supported?
Everyone is welcome and supported in the orchestra. There is no pressure to perform and people are always on hand to provide encouragement.
I'm a returning player. Can I come along?
If you have not played for years, both Simon and Lesley are dedicated to making you feel comfortable. Rehearsals are patient and collaborative, with zero pressure to play every single note perfectly.
Is there an audition to join?
No formal auditions are required. We believe in making music accessible for everyone, whether you are a longstanding player, beginner or returning to music. We suggest potential members are comfortable sight-reading and playing in most keys.
What happens in the social break?
We have a break in the middle of rehersal where we have the opportunity to have a hot drink and a biscuit (or two) and socalise with other players.
